If you don't have the habit of using your rear brake, in an emergency situation, you may grab the front brake and crash.
Question 3 months ago on Introduction. Look into a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course in your area. Typically lasts 3 days and worth every penny. With that certificate, you should be able to get the motorcycle endorsement, and a discount on insurance.

Reply 3 years ago. I agree. In some states you pay a registration fee which they refund at the end of the course. Some states use old beater bikes so you will probably train on what you wont be riding when you get your first bike. My state uses old Honda's 's and 's. However, if you want to really learn indepth then check out a Harley Riding Academy training course. Yes they are pricey but you get to learn on a well maintained and even new Harley and a bike that will be close to what you will be riding.

Slowing with the clutch out means engine braking is helping, and you are more likely to be in the correct gear if you want to speed up again. You may wonder why there are several cc and cc bikes on my list. Well, those bikes are designed to be easy to ride by average riders wanting a bike that is comfortable and practical for all types of riding. The engine displacement may be greater, but the power delivery is more mellow and user-friendly. Cruisers are sized with big displacement engines, but they are tuned to lug around town and produce less power per cc than standard or sporty models.
But, these bikes are still not great starter bikes becasue they are heavy with forward controls and a long wheelbase, making them unwieldy at slow speeds. Get a Honda Rebel or if you like cruisers and have a really short inseam. Get a Kawi Versys if you like adventure-bike styling and capability. A step up in size may be just fine for a lot of beginners. In this case, the Honda CB series makes a lot of sense. I like the Vulcan S for a mid-sized cruiser and a cheap, used DRzs for a bigger dual-sport.
KLR are other more off road worthy option.

For someone who is pretty comfortable on two wheels, a Ninja or SV are my most recommended bikes becasue they are capable of touring, commuting and doing track days. You can even ride dirt roads pretty well on these bikes. My question is this, will the bike be much easier to handle with that amount of weight loss from a stock bike as well as being a little faster for a lap time. I know that this is a upright bike and not a sport bike. I am 4sec. My weight is with gear on and age 68yrs.

I had a Striple as my dedicated track bike for 4 wonderful years until I decided to go back to a supersport and got a GSXR I had Penske suspension which made it as close to a supersport as possible. I would expect you can go somewhat faster on the Suzuki, but 4 seconds a lap is a LOT faster. Something else is up. Or is it not set up very well?
